SHERMAN, TX - The Johnson & Wales University volleyball team earned its first SCAC conference victory of the season in thrilling fashion Saturday with a five-set win (18-25, 24-26, 26-24, 26-24, 18-16) over the University of Dallas.
After dropping the first two sets, the Wildcats (3-26, 1-14) stormed back and won the final three to top the Crusaders.
Freshman Hope Hines and senior Brooke Paxton led the comeback effort with 20 kills apiece. Senior Ashlee Ruehs (13 kills) and freshman Hunter Halbower (11) also had double-digit kill performances as the team finished with a season-best 70 kills.
Sophomore Jacquelyn Ortiz orchestrated the attack with 61 assists, the second-highest total by an SCAC player this season. Hines also added 30 digs while sophomore Kaitlin Jones finished with 29, freshman Emily Booth 23 and Paxton 26.
The Wildcats totaled 16 block assists, including five by Halbower, four by Paxton and three each by Ruehs and junior Teagan Gutka.
JWU returns to the court Sunday against Southwestern and Centenary.
